Social & Emotional Learning (SEL)

About SEL at Long Branch

In addition to our focus on academics, Long Branch staff also embed social and emotional learning (SEL) and mindfulness into our curriculum. As a staff, we use common language and work on supporting students with the skills they need to help them manage their emotions, show empathy, build and maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions. Our student support team (made up of our school counselor, school psychologist, and school social worker) help to support students and staff on SEL interventions. As a staff, we also have implemented SEL practices in our routines and continue to further our knowledge in SEL and mindfulness.

Long Branch implements Second Step and Mind Yeti in grades K-5 during our morning meetings. We also have SEL practices in place as a staff and continue to create learning opportunities to further our knowledge on SEL. To learn more about what we are covering, please read our monthly SEL Newsletter, SELebrate, available via ParentSquare. Below you can find HomeLinks that talk about unit themes, what to look for, and things to try at home.

SEL Survey

The SEL survey is conducted multiple times per school year for students in grades 3-12. The survey provides insight on topics such as Growth Mindset, Self-Efficacy, Self-Management and Social Awareness. For more information about the SEL Survey, please visit the APS SEL District Page.
