Free COVID tests for each student – kits went home this past Tuesday in your child’s backpack. All employees and students are encouraged to use this free resource in alignment with Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidelines which include but are not limited to 5 days after exposure, when symptomatic, or before/after traveling domestically and internationally.  Each kit contains two rapid antigen tests and results are not required to be report to the school or via the daily health screener unless the results are positive. Instructions are included in English and Spanish in each kit and an informational video with step-by-step instructions is available here.

The PTA needs your help! Please take a moment to respond to this survey. It is in English and Spanish. https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/HNJ3TCM.  Thank you. This survey will close February 13.

Counselor’s Corner – This past Tuesday, the PTA hosted Ms. Jennifer Gross, LCSW, CSOTP from the Child Advocacy Center for a training on child sexual abuse prevention. If you were unable to attend and are still interested, please visit this website for future training dates. These trainings are also available in Spanish. https://www.signupgenius.com/go/20f0a45aca829a6fd0-stewards1

For our 5th grade families, students will be listening to presentations from their zoned neighborhood middle school later this morning. During these sessions, students are learning about the different course options, activities, clubs, and the Course Request Form (CRF). Students are asked to complete the digital CRF with their course selections with their grown-up at home. Please make sure to submit the CRF by Friday, February 25. If you have any questions about middle school, your zoned middle school or how to access the CRF, please reach out to Ms. Martin at stephanie.martin@apsva.us or 703-228-8058.

New way to report absences – You will be able to report your student(s) absent via the ParentVUE website and ParentVUE mobile app. This new feature will appear as a blue button titled “Report Absence” on the main page. This will allow parents/guardians to report absences for a single day or multiple days.

For each absence reported, parents/guardians must provide a detailed note explaining the reason. If you are reporting your student as sick, please list the symptoms your student is experiencing. The note will help school attendance staff select the correct attendance code.

When an absence is submitted, parents/guardians will initially see the reported absence code as “Unverified.” The absence verification is completed by the school attendance staff who will review the parent-submitted absence and determine whether it is excused or unexcused according to APS Attendance Policy Implementation Procedure J-5.1.30.

This is the new preferred method for families to report absences. The electronic notification will serve as the required written notice for student absences. If you have a legal or medical document, please provide it to the school attendance staff upon your student’s return to school or via email. Parents/guardians can still submit a student absence notice via your school’s attendance email longbranch.attendance@apsva.us or the attendance hotline 703-228-4222.

For step-by-step instructions, click here. For assistance with reporting absences via ParentVUE, contact your school’s attendance staff.

Weekly Testing – Cian Diagnositics has taken over the weekly asymptomatic testing in APS this January. I know there have been parents (including myself) who have not been able to access their child’s results. Exclusions due to being a close contact/COVID positive – all students who are considered close contacts to confirmed COVID positive cases, will receive an exclusion letter – even if they are fully vaccinated. Outdoor lunches during the winter – I would like parent input to Long Branch’s decisions around outdoor lunch during the winter months. Please complete this one question survey. It is in both English and Spanish. Thank you. https://forms.gle/3Pgd3PK4CAnsuFXW8

Counselor’s Corner – Long Branch’s school counselors continue to teach lessons about bullying and being good upstanders. Part of what the counselors want to emphasize through their lessons is that not all mean behavior is bullying. BUT mean behavior is important to address and we want to empower all our lions to deal with teasing and unkindness. Here are some ways students can handle unkind behavior from peers and siblings:

  1. Shrug. When someone teases us they want to ‘get a rise’ out of us. By shrugging we let them know that we won’t give them that power.
  2. Bug and a Wish. Tell the person what you feel without blame: It bugs me when you_______________ I wish you would______________.
  3. Agree. This might be the most counterintuitive suggestion. What if someone says to your child, “your lunch stinks” and they say, ‘Yes it does’. Here again students give the person/sibling/peer teasing them no control over them or their reactions.

Feel free to practice teasing and responding (using these three tools) around the dinner table. When kids practice standing up to teasing they feel empowered and prepared to deal with the mean behavior of others!

We wanted to let you know that between Thanksgiving and winter break, Long Branch’s school counselors will be teaching child protection lessons in every K-5 classroom. We teach students the ‘touching/private body part rule’. The touching rule explains that no person should ever touch your child’s private body parts except to keep them healthy. We describe ‘private body parts’ as those parts of our body covered by swim trunks or a two-piece bathing suit. We also explain how important it is for students to report to a trusted adult if the ‘private body parts’ rule is ever broken. Our hope is that through these lessons we will empower all our Long Branch Lions to stay safe and thrive. Please check out the letters attached for more information. APS Food Survey – Arlington’s Food Security Task Force is reaching out to the community to hear about their experience in accessing food in Arlington. We are working with the Urban Institute to survey residents living in the 22203 and 22204 zip codes to help us improve access to nutritional food. Residents in certain areas of these zip codes will be receiving a postcard in the mail this week inviting them to participate in the survey, including those served by your school. These neighborhoods overlap some school boundaries, so at some schools, nearly all families will receive the postcard, while others will have only a few families receiving the survey. Long Branch families may receive a postcard – this is a legitimate mailing.

The post card will have a link and a QR code to access the survey. There’s also a phone line that people can call for help or to have someone administer the survey in English or Spanish. Anyone who completes the survey will be given the opportunity to receive a thank you gift of a $10 Visa or Amazon gift card. They’ll get two more postcard reminders over the course of the coming month. The survey will close on Monday, November 22.

Social Media/Netflix – As many of you know, there has been a TikTok monthly theme going around encouraging vandalism and other inappropriate acts for students to conduct on school property. Dr. Durán released a statement about this topic, you may read it here. There have also been students who have watched the recent Netflix’s series, Squid Games, and have been re-enacting those games during recess. We have spoken with those students specifically as well as the 4th grade teachers have spoken to classes in general. We urge parents to talk with their children about social media and other trending topics regularly.  It takes conversations from both the school and home to continue to reinforce positive and appropriate behaviors. Please do not hesitate to reach out to Ms. Jackson or me with questions about any of this.

Counselor’s Corner – Over the last few weeks the school counselors delivered lessons about expected versus unexpected behaviors. The concept can be a helpful one for students both at school and at home. Expected behaviors are behaviors that give people around your students comfortable thoughts about them and are the norm for the setting. Classroom rules/expectations are the expected behaviors in the classroom and are taught consistently. (Examples of expected behaviors: raising hands, paying attention, being respectful, etc.) Unexpected behaviors are the behaviors that give people uncomfortable thoughts about students. The unexpected behaviors for the classroom are not always taught, but it’s important to teach students about how unexpected behaviors can affect their learning, as well as the learning of others. (Examples of unexpected behaviors: hitting, blurting out, not completing work, wandering around the room etc.) Expected/Unexpected behaviors are a helpful way to explain how students’ choices affect others without shaming them. Can you think of expected and unexpected behaviors within your home? Do you find the expected/unexpected framing of behaviors helpful?

Next week we will officially begin our bullying prevention lessons since October is National Bullying Prevention Month. On Wednesday, October 20th we will participate in Unity Day where we will wear orange to show we are against bullying behaviors and promote kindness, acceptance, and inclusion. We will also have a Bullying Prevention Spirit Week from October 25-29. Spirit days will be announced in the coming weeks. Please don’t hesitate to reach out with any questions or concerns.  Ms. Martin, stephanie.martin@apsva.us; Ms. Fuller, danielle.fuller@aspva.us

If you notice people letting their dogs go to the bathroom on our grass, please let them know that students eat there, and we would ask that dogs don’t go to the bathroom where students eat. We also have families walk their children to school and bring their dogs with them, and often dogs interact with other dogs in a threatening manner. We also have students and staff that are afraid of dogs, so kindly consider leaving your dog(s) at home with you when dropping off and picking up your child from school. Thank you for your cooperation in keeping school grounds as clean and safe for students and staff as possible.

Friday, September 17, 2021Picture of Constitution Day, September 17

We had another great week here at Long Branch. We have continued to practice routines and expectations all while building community. We are starting to ramp up our beginning of the year assessment information collection so that teachers may use that data to inform their planning and instruction. I have been reading to classes that sign up, and I have really enjoyed chatting with students and listening to their interpretation about what a principal actually does all day (my favorite answer, “Eat donuts all day.”)!

Counselor’s Corner -Hello from your friendly school counselors! Both counselors have begun teaching lessons in your child’s classroom. During our introductory lessons we’ll be explaining to your kiddos how we can support them this school year and how they can communicate with us. So that you know, there is a folder/mailbox on Ms. Martin and Ms. Fuller’s doors where kids can leave a note asking to speak with us. We also have a digital form on our Canvas page. Families can also reach both of us by email. Some of the things we can do to support your students include:  set academic goals, make friends, adjust to new environments, cope with difficulties and assist families going through transition.

We also wanted to let you all know that September is Suicide Prevention Awareness Month. This is a time where we raise awareness on this stigmatized, and often taboo, topic. In addition, this month is used to spread hope and vital information to people affected by suicide. The goal is ensuring that everyone have access to the resources they need to discuss suicide prevention and to seek help. While we don’t talk about it in the elementary level, we wanted to share this information with all Long Branch families along with resources to support this topic. Please visit the following sites for more information:

Wow, it has been a great week! Thank you for all your support in helping launch the 2021 – 2022 school year. Students have been full of smiles, laughter, and joy as they have been back in the building. Thank you to the parents who have been able to volunteer their time to help us with outdoor lunches. Thank you to the parents who are keeping their children home who are showing any signs or symptoms of sickness – we need everyone’s help to keep everyone healthy.

Please do not hesitate to reach out to your child’s teacher if you have any questions about day-to-day procedures, routines, or expectations. Please also feel free to reach out to the Assistant Principal, Carolyn Jackson, (Carolynruth.Jackson@apsva.us) or me, Jessica DaSilva (Jessica.DaSilva@apsva.us) if you need anything.

Please continue to complete your child’s daily health screener prior to your child coming to school.

We continue to ask parents/guardians to keep children home that are experiencing any symptoms of sickness. It is more important than ever in the current COVID world we are living in. Please see APS’ plan for contact tracing, quarantining, and other important health & safety metrics at this website: https://www.apsva.us/school-year-2021-22/health-safety-information/. Counselor’s Corner – Hello Long Branch Lions! Long Branch has two counselors this year. Ms. Martin (Room 226) is still Long Branch’s full-time counselor and she’ll be teaching lessons in 2nd, 3rd , 4th and 5th grades. Ms. Fuller (Room 209) will be at Long Branch on Thursdays and Fridays and will be teaching Kindergartners and First Graders! Ms. Martin and Ms. Fuller both love being school counselors at Long Branch. We are here to help your child if they are struggling with schoolwork, thinking about what you want to be when you grow up, learning about how to handle our strong feelings, or curious about how to make and keep friends. You can get in touch with Ms. Martin at stephanie.martin@apsva.us and Ms. Fuller at danielle.fuller@apsva.us. Students can request to talk to us by letting the teacher or grown-ups know they would like to talk to us. Ms. Martin can’t wait to welcome all her lions back to school and Ms. Fuller can’t wait to meet the pride

Friday, August 27, 2021 Banner that says "Welcome Back Lions"

Welcome to the first “Weekly Roar” of the year and welcome to Long Branch for the 21 – 22 school year that begins on Monday. I am very excited to kick off another school year and even more excited to be back in person.

During the first few weeks of school, teachers will be working hard to build community within their classroom, get to know their students, as well as build norms, routines, and set expectations within their classrooms.

Arrival and Dismissal Procedures – doors will open for students to come into the building at 8:05. Staff will be on hand to ensure students get to where they are going for the first week or two of school. All students must come through Door 1. If you are planning on driving your child to school, please continue the practice we used last year, of parking in the neighborhood and walking your child to the front door. Our Kiss and Ride drop off area is very small and it will be faster for you to park and walk then wait in the Kiss and Ride line.

Dismissal begins at 3:06. All students who ride buses or are meeting parents will exit through the front doors. Kindergarten and first grade students must be met by an adult. If you are meeting your child at school, please gather in the front of the building on the grassy area near the lion.

Extended Day – Families that are participating in the Extended Day program should drop off and pick up their child from Door 5 (in the back of the school). Adrienne Day is the new Supervisor of the Extended Day program. (Adrienne.Day@apsva.us).

Breakfast and lunches will continue to be free of charge for students this school year. Please see our school’s website for more information about the lunch plan for Long Branch.
